Now, if you are going to hike in Scotland, I feel the Isle of Skye is a must. I flew into Glasgow and drove to the Isle of Skye, you can get around by buses or tours but hiring a car or campervan is the way to go. It’s a place in the highlands and contains Scotlands best hikes (in my opinion) the hiking there will leave you in awe. Marvellous mountain tops with luscious green grass. The highlands is an absolute must. It’s hard to narrow down the best hikes to add to that hiking list but for me, the Quiraing walk is one of the best Isle of Skye hikes.

Getting there

It’s pretty straight forward to get here, if you pop “the Quiraing car park” it will lead you right to the parking lot where the trail starts. It’s only 4kms from staffing and 30 minutes from Portree. These are probably the best options of accomodation if you aren’t in a campervan. Most of the hiking parking lots do have a fee. This fee goes towards maintaining these lots and services like toilets. Just pay and display the ticket in your car window. It 3 Euro for 3 hours and 5 Euro for 6 hours. I paid $3 euro because I knew I would be under 3 hours. You can pay this by card which is super handy if you don’t have cash on you. 

My number one tip for this hike is, TO GO EARLY! Now I know everyone always yeah yeah go early but really for this one, you’ll be thankful you did because it can fill up and when you are hiking this glorious trail, you’ll know why. 

From the carpark, the trail is pretty clear and well defined. The Quiraing viewpoint is right opposite the carpark so if you are just there to do a quick car stop and take a photo, it’s quite easy to get to. But if you do the Quiraing walk you’ll be instantly rewarded with jaw dropping views. It’s almost hard to keep your eyes on the trail because you just want to look around. Follow the trail/people and when the path splits at the very beginning take the right route. I feel doing this anticlockwise is the best option. There’s plenty of photo spots to stop at along the way with backdrops that look like screens savers. I feel the most ideal photo spots are actually along this first part of the route. Hiking in Scotland is a landscape photographers dream.

Now if you aren’t feeling up to it you can definitely turn back any time but I do recommend completing the loop. After about 30 minutes is when you see the famous Needle and The Prison in front of you. From here you want to keep following the trail and soon you’ll see more pointy pinnacles in the distance. Keep to the path that stays left, close to the mountain wall. You’ll have a small steep section that climbs up to the ridge line.

The halfway Point

Now this is actually the point where the usual circuit loops BUT if you have the energy don’t stop here. The real views are at the table top mountain to your right. I thought about ignoring this but I’m glad I pushed through and went to see the view for myself. It’s about 15-20 minutes to the top with some uphill climbing but nothing super strenuous. I think the view speaks for themselves.

Once you are done taking mental memories and hopefully physical ones with your camera, head back the same way you came until you reach the fork in the road again. At this point you’ll want to head right. You’ll see the route that climbs up and over the cliffs you walked past on the way in. There’s no hiding it, this part is a slog but it has to be done. Once the magnificent views come into sight you’ll soon forget about how much your were just sweating. Now there are insane viewpoints along here but remember to be safe because on the edge it is a straight drop. So stay back and safe and walk along the trail until it starts to descend. 

End is in sight

This last section was super muddy when I did it and if its rained, there’s no avoiding it. Just embrace the mud and watch your step. The trail can get a little harder to see on this route down but if you just head back in the direction of the car park, you’ll be fine. It will all lead out to one path eventually and it is really hard to get lost. Just don’t panic if you lose to trail for a section, just eyes on the carpark and head that way and down.

For any Isle of Skye hiking, you’ll need:

• Water, as always.
  Good solid footwear because it can get muddy and slippery.Snacks/food. Never be caught out hungry on a hike, that’s no fun for anyone.
  Hat.
  Sunscreen.
  Camera/phone camera!

Best photography gear for travel – The Ultimate Gear List

I have been a professional photographer for the last 8 years and when exploring I only take the best travel photography gear with me. Narrowing down the best camera gear for travel can be hard to keep it lightweight but my favourite travel camera gear and accessories are outline below. My travel photography kit list

I like to travel as lightweight as possible and through lots of trial and error with camera bags and tripods I have made a list of everything I travel with in my camera bag. 

Best travel camera – Canon EOS R 

Mirrorless cameras are they way of the future for travel photographers, videographers and bloggers. They are super lightweight without compromisisng on quality. I believe it is the best professional camera for travel photography and best camera for adventure photography.

Canon is one of the most affordable, compact, and best mirrorless cameras and I believe this is the best travel camera on the market. My image quality it outstanding and you can see this through my Instagram and blog images.

Best lens for travel photography – Canon RF 24-105 F4

This lens is my go to lens for travel photography, the focal range is perfect for everything on the go and the sacrifice of having F4 means it’s so much lighter than the F2.8. Having inbuilt image stabilisation means you can have longer shutter speeds while hand held because the stabilisation in the lens and camera work together. I’ve never felt the need for the 2.8 in the field. The versatility of this lens allows me to shoot a wide range of detailed portraits to picture perfect landscapes. This travel blogging lens is a must to have in your travel photography gear.

Canon RF 70-200 F4

The dynamic range on the 70-200 makes it a must have in my bag. Again it being a RF lens means it only weighs 695 grams. It can create beautiful bokeh on portraits and compress landscapes for those drastic looking landscapes. Example when I say it can compress landscapes, which can make objects that are far away, look much closer than they really are. Just like the mountain in this image. No you don’t need the best travel photography equipment out there but it does help and the new RF lenses are a game changer for travel photography and keeping your camera bag light.

Aerial Photography Camera – DJI Air 2s

DJI Mavic Air 2s is the best camera with a massive 1-inch sensor that can record 5.4k films at 30 frames per second and 20MP still shots. It’s perfect for a lightweight drone, being able to shoot a different perspective is a game changer and you wont regret having this in your bag.

Laptop/Computer – Macbook Pro M1 chip 14 inch

Travel photography gear includes a means of editing. You need a solid computer when travelling and this is it. I use my laptop more than my camera when travelling so you want it to be trustworthy. This is where I edit photos and videos, write blogs, book hotels, flights and research destinations. The 14inch is lightweight with impressive displays and processing power. 

Camera Bag – WANDRD PRVKE 21L

The best camera gear for travel starts with the bag. I did A LOT of research when trying to find the best travel camera bag on the market and I may have found it. I wanted something that was dicrete (that you couldn’t exactly tell it was a camera bag) and something practical. I think Wandrd has the best camera bags on the market. The 21L is perfect for your every day camera travel bag. It holds everything stated in this travel list with ease. 

Camera Batteries – Spare Canon Batteries

Canon camera batteries. I never go anywhere without multiples of batteries. Be prepared!

Memory card – SanDisk 64GB Extreme PRO

SanDisk Extreme Pro is what most creators will recommend and that’s because it delivers maximum speed for performance and uncompromising images and 4K video quality. I’d recommend a minimum storage space of 64GB so you can shoot multiple events without running out of storage space. 

Camera Tripod – Ulazni Zero Y Lightweight Travel Tripod

This may be the Best travel tripod for landscape photography and travel blogging. It only weighs 1.1kg and may be the best lightweight travel tripod on the market and here’s why. Tripods are great for long exposures, low light conditions, stacking images and self portraits.

External Hardrive – SanDisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD

You should always back up your work and so I always travel with a hard drive. The new SSD drives (solid state drives) are great for travel as they are Durable and reliable. SSDs are Faster than traditional Hard Drives, less weight, no noise and more practical size.

Queenstown is a magical place and it’s a popular place for travellers all around the world, the drastic mountain tops, turquoise waters and small town feels make it a perfect backdrop for that special occasion photos, weddings, elopements, and engagements are this township’s specialty and I think it a perfect spot to escape and celebrate all in one. Queenstown is a quaint small alpine town surrounded by stunning mountains and right on the water of the third biggest lake in New Zealand which is the colour of the sky, if not bluer. With breathtaking views around every corner, you can absolutely understand people wanting their wedding photos taken here. I may be slightly biased because I’ve been lucky enough to photograph couples dream photos here for the last 4 years, but it truly is a special place. 

Because Queenstown is in demand as a wedding destination, there’s some important wedding prep. Organisation is key. I’d recommend contacting your photographer at least 6 months in advance. Using local photographers to Queenstown/Wanaka region is the best bet to avoid any travel hassles that could arise. Along with organisation comes research, google wedding photographers Queenstown and look at Instagram. Check out their gallery because all photographers have a different way of shooting and their own unique style. When picking your wedding photographer, go with the persons gallery/portfolio you love. You should be able to see yourself in their photos. 

Destination weddings in Queenstown means getting married at one of the local vineyards or flying up to a mountain top and looking over Queenstown. If you are getting married in Queenstown and having a full day wedding, I would recommend picking a venue that has variety. This way, your ceremony, bridal party photos, couple photos and ceremony shots will have the opportunity to be taken in different locations. Having a bit of variety in scenery can make all the difference to make it feel like it wasn’t all taken in the same spot. If you are eloping, my absolute favourite spot is flying up to the local mountain Cecil Peak at the Ledge. It’s this flat rocky location on local mountain that has some of the most insane views you have probably ever seen. One way you are looking back over the lake at Queenstown with Ben Lomond mountain in the background and then other direction is an endless mountain range leading down Glenorchy way.

Absolutely, if you have a specific must have shot, I’m more than happy to accommodate. There is one thing to keep in mind though, no two weddings will look the same even if they were shot at the same venue. It all relies on light, details, colour scheme. So if you have a photo for reference just keep in mind it won’t ever look identical but I will do my best to make it unique to you and your wedding.
